Background of the Study
Virtual reality (VR) technology has emerged as a promising tool in medical education, offering immersive and interactive experiences for training students in various healthcare procedures. In nursing education, VR training has been shown to improve students' technical skills, enhance critical thinking, and build confidence in performing complex procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (Chang et al., 2023). The Federal Medical Centre in Asaba has incorporated VR-based training into its nursing program to help students develop and refine their CPR skills in a controlled, virtual environment that simulates real-life scenarios.
Traditional CPR training often relies on mannequins and instructor-led demonstrations, which, while effective, may not fully replicate the high-pressure, dynamic nature of a real-life emergency situation. VR training allows students to practice CPR in realistic, simulated environments, providing instant feedback and enabling repeated practice without the constraints of physical resources (Siegler et al., 2023). Several studies have demonstrated that VR-based training improves performance in skills such as CPR by providing a more engaging and interactive learning experience (Rodrigues et al., 2023). This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual reality training in enhancing nursing students' ability to perform CPR at the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba.
Statement of the Problem
While VR technology has been integrated into nursing education, there is limited research on its specific impact on nursing students' ability to perform CPR. At the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba, nursing students undergo both traditional and VR-based CPR training, but the comparative effectiveness of these approaches has not been adequately explored. This study seeks to determine whether VR-based training enhances students' CPR skills and their confidence in performing the procedure in real-world situations.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of virtual reality training on nursing students' ability to perform CPR at the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba.
2. To compare the effectiveness of VR-based CPR training with traditional training methods in improving students' CPR skills.
3. To examine nursing students' perceptions of the usefulness and feasibility of VR-based CPR training.
Research Questions
1. How does virtual reality training impact nursing students' ability to perform CPR at Federal Medical Centre, Asaba?
2. How does the effectiveness of VR-based CPR training compare to traditional CPR training methods?
3. What are nursing students' perceptions of the usefulness of virtual reality training in CPR?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nursing students trained with virtual reality will demonstrate better CPR performance than those trained with traditional methods.
2. There is a significant relationship between virtual reality-based CPR training and nursing students' confidence in performing CPR.
3. Nursing students who undergo VR-based CPR training report higher levels of satisfaction and engagement compared to those who receive traditional CPR training.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, who have participated in either traditional or virtual reality-based CPR training. The study will assess their performance and confidence in CPR skills after completing the training. Limitations include potential technological challenges with VR equipment and the subjective nature of students' perceptions of the training.
Definitions of Terms
1. Virtual Reality (VR) Training: A simulated learning environment that allows students to practice real-world skills, such as CPR, in an interactive and immersive virtual setting.
2. CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation): An emergency procedure used to restore blood circulation and breathing in someone who has suffered cardiac arrest.
3. Traditional CPR Training: CPR training methods that typically involve instructor-led demonstrations using mannequins and physical practice scenarios.
